Coaching and being coached.
For years I’d known I wanted to do something more than what I had been doing with my life. I didn’t enjoy the direction my career had taken, seemingly without consulting me, and longed for a change that would allow me to live a life that could really help others.
During a particularly trying part of my life, I was asked by a friend to tag along with her to an introductory weekend for the coaching program she’d just signed up for. I could ‘try-out’ the program and see if I liked it before committing.
By the end of the first day, I was hooked. It had as much to do with the others in the program: their energy and enthusiasm, as it did with what the program could offer me: a new career where I could learn the confidence and necessary skills to help others make long-term, positive changes in their lives. Until that weekend, I didn’t know what I’d been missing.
I know, it sounds a little cult-ish to anyone who has lost sight of what it means to want to live a happy and fulfilling life. But for me, what this particular program gave me was the kick in the pants to be the change I wanted in my life.
What better way to thoroughly understand the power of the program than to become an active participant in it? Through part of the 10-month intensive training, we coached and were coached by others in the program to discover and tackle our own real life challenges that we’d been avoiding. One of the things I was being coached through was my fear of leaving my secure day-job and starting a different, more fulfilling career and lifestyle. To be sure I was making the right move for me, and before I could implement such a drastic change to my life, I needed to take some time to allow myself to THINK. Like many people, I had spent each day going through the motions that that day demanded. It had been years since I had given my precious time to myself. Over the following few months, I worked with my student-coaches and began applying smaller, then larger actions as I worked toward my goals.
And you know what? The coaching process worked! Within 15 months of graduating from the program, I had saved enough money to allow me to quit my job, let go of my city apartment, and was in the process of moving to Spain for the winter to re-energize myself. This was the first step in letting go of the old life and it felt AMAZING!
Now, I’m not saying that you need enroll in a coaching program to feel ‘alive’ again, but if that’s what you want I can recommend a terrific one. What I am saying is that if you’ve been going through the motions in your life, feeling like you’re searching for ‘something more’, or have a particular goal you want to reach, then maybe you could use a little help from someone who has been there and overcome uncertain hesitation, and coached others through that same reticence.
I have coached individuals on identifying, addressing and achieving personal and professional goals, resulting in improved confidence and habits that can be applied to other areas of their lives.
